Why I almost gave up on weight loss…

If you’ve ever felt like giving up on your weight loss goals, you are not alone. I almost gave up myself - because I was sure that I was already doing everything right - and as a result, I thought there were no other options other than living a life obsessing about calories and exercising myself to exhaustion.
Once I realized that I was obese, I spent at least a year doing nothing about it, because I didn’t understand why I was overweight. After all I was “doing everything right”.
In order to get past being in limbo about my weight, I had to admit to myself that clearly there was something I needed to learn about myself (or about health in general) that I didn’t yet know.
Despite the fact that I had worked in the natural health field since 1998 and had been a holistic nutritionist since 2006, obviously I didn’t know everything.
The fact that I was obese and health conscious, should have been all the evidence I needed to know that something wasn’t right and I need to change it.
The shift begins when we give up on being right, let go and stop holding on to the ideal that “we already know” and we’ve already “tried everything”. Only after I gave up that belief, was I inspired to actually learn something new.
It’s best to learn from someone who has been where you are, has overcome their own challenges and is still doing the work to maintain their results.
It’s been well over a decade since I started this journey.
I was 36 years old when I first became obese.
It took me 3 years to turn it around (with many ups and downs along the way), but by the time I hit 40, I was at my ideal weight - and people told me it looked like I dropped 10 years off my face too (that’s because I became healthier in the process).
Today I maintain a healthy weight at 49.
Sometimes my weight has fluctuated by about 10 lbs (give or take) during times of stress - but I have enough practice to turn that around fairly quickly too.
Sometimes the stress was so acutely bad, that I lost too much weight for my own preferences (personally, I prefer how I look at the upper end of what is normal for my height).
At other times, the stress was chronic - triggering water retention, puffiness and more weight gain than I prefer.
It’s not just about getting to our ideal weight. It’s about knowing how to stay there (or get back there) despite life’s ups and downs.
That’s why I took both my knowledge as a holistic nutritionist, plus the wisdom of my personal life experience to create a path to guide people to natural weight loss without dieting - the way I did.
I didn’t count a single calorie or exercise to drop 12 dress sizes - going from 176 lbs down to as low as 125lbs.
The path is about sustainable weight maintenance.
Most programs are about getting to the goal using restriction and punishing exercise that hurts, instead of heals the body.
What I teach is based on healing principles, holistic nutrition, respect for nature and self love through self nourishment.
There’s no going hungry, giving up pleasure in food or forcing the body to lose weight through restriction or exerting dominance against the body.
I teach the hormonal basis of obesity, which addresses the underlying cause of why some people can be overweight, even when they eat “healthy”.
It still does require change though.
It requires the willingness to learn something different - and in many cases, it requires doing the exact opposite of what conventional diets, mainstream institutions and the media tells us we should be doing to be healthy and lose weight.
Yes, it does require diet, lifestyle and exercise changes, but all ‘take-aways’ are replaced with “add ins” that taste better, feel better and work better.
It’s all about learning, embodying and sustaining health.
While everyone’s situation is unique, if you have no underlying health imbalances, it’s not that difficult if you embody natural diet and lifestyle principles permanently and change your mindset - this is an inside-out paradigm shift.
You have to embody the new things you learn permanently - staying focused on process and not on results - you have to make it your forever lifestyle - and practice both patience - and detachment - which essentially looks like putting your health gains front and central - and your weight loss goals to the back of the line (this is the key).
If you have underlying health imbalances you might need more specific strategies customized to your body’s unique needs, before your metabolism can turn the corner - at the same time, you might be shocked though at how fast your body responds when you give it what it has been begging for!
All your uncomfortable body symptoms - including storing extra body fat are both a cry for help and a form of protection!
